Media, Technology, and Crises

Media and technology have grown into the standard that is commonly used by individuals in modern society. Their roles have the utmost significance in the business sphere, personal relationships, and also in public spaces. With media and technology being used with such frequency, it's almost never turned "off " in our lives (Smith, 2012).

When dealing with crisis communication, technology now has a counterpart that now plays a pivotal role in distributing information. That counterpart is social media. The distribution of stories or information regarding a crisis was once a primary role of and limited to radio and news broadcasts on television. Now, in this modern era, the roles have been reversed. Radio and television are now secondary in terms of the distribution of news, and technology via social media has moved into the primary role. Twitter is one of the platforms in which individuals and public affairs professionals utilize as a resource to receive the latest happenings in our world (Baron & Philbin, 2009). Our society has allowed Twitter and other platforms to be the informant of news because students, as well as other individuals in society, would much rather check their social media accounts than look or listen to what's going on in the world via radio or television (Baron & Philbin, 2009). It seems to be more convenient to find out things from social networks because its easily accessible from a cell phone, and an individual's cell phone is with them twenty-four hours a day in this era.
Another way to assist crisis communication management is to utilize social media when implementing drills that will be used when things could go wrong (Baron & Philbin, 2009). "Realistic drills are the best way of evaluating the readiness of an organization to respond to an actual crisis" (Baron & Philbin, 2009). The ability to disseminate information across multiple platforms is essential to utilizing the many uses of social media (Baron &m Philbin, 2009). But it doesn't stop there. The drills enable organization's to test the responses of three critical elements: policies, plans, and people. For policies, are the right policies in place to handle the given situation? For planning, does the crisis communication plan incorporate monitoring, active engagement with relevant sites, and the use of innovative social media? And lastly, for people, are the individuals who're responsible for responding to the crisis familiar with social media and its culture? And will their responses be engaging while maintaining the values and priorities of the culture (Baron & Philbin, 2009)? The ability for an organization to answer these questions, along with establishing social media as a mainstay of its priorities is definitely a positive trend. Its a positive trend because of its frequent use and its instant access to individuals around the world.

Multimedia Tools (Powerpoint)

Proper Basketball Shooting Technique, Fundamentals, And Form

Multimedia Tools

Multimedia is an excellent tool to utilize when adding content to a website or blog for a company or organization of any capacity.  Having a website without it would be similar to "a cupcake without icing: functional but lacking" (Sniderman, 2010).  In today's society, using multimedia on any type of web-page has become the norm (Sniderman, 2010).

Multimedia enhances our messaging by adding visual interest to the information conveyed to make it more compelling, informative, and memorable.  Multimedia refers to a combination of photo galleries, slideshows, video, audio, animation, and any other form of content with interactive features (Rutgers, 2014).  With these elements in-tact, any website can provide a user with a more exciting and dynamic web experience (Rutgers, 2014).  The key multimedia technique to use, as with a number of things in life, is moderation (Rutgers, 2014).  Creating a website with a lot of bells and whistles is tolerable, but the sites that exercise the most restraint with multimedia technologies are usually the ones that are most effective (Rutgers, 2014).

Best Practices For Blogs

Tonight, I've taken a step out of the norm of my usual blog, Blogger, to see what else is out there in the world to voice my individualism.  Needless to say, I found an abundance of options!  There's blogs for corporate, personal or diary, hobby or, interest, professional, or for communal use.  The challenge issued was to find a blog that had the essential functions to post forms of writing and information delivery.  I found this particular platform in the blog titled, Tmblr.

Tmblr is one of the absolute best when it comes to visuals, combined with content, to enhance your personal blog's presence.  You have the option of images, unlimited and unrestricted content, videos, and also music.  After your entertainment palate has been satisfied you have the ability to post any type of content desired.  It can be as informative, vague, or as simple as you wish.  There aren't any prerequisites for content, therefore the user determines what will or won't be posted on their particular blog.

The best practices that are present when creating a blog involve illustrating appropriate form, function, and substance by establishing authority, content, style, frequency, engagement, and posting at the right time.  Does Tmblr offer these options?  Absolutely!  With Tmblr, individuals have the ability to self-host their particular blog, making it an extension of their chosen profession, which creates authority for that content.

Establishing content is always a challenging task.  The author must stay creative, while also imagining what his followers would like to see, what information would aid in successful use of a particular product, what would make life easier, or simply what would keep them entertained.  These characteristics and their solutions can be found through competitors' sites, social conversations, inbound Q&A's, and other feedback channels. With a plethora of options available, there will always be avenues to create meaningful and useful content.

Next, there's style.  Here's where an individual gets to develop the brand's voice.  Choices of the brand's voice will be intentional, and once it's determined, it must be adhered to at all times.  Individual authors and individual posts may have a different tone, but they should never deviate from the brand voice.  It may appear that this strategy has restrictions, but it's all done to make content easier to create.  Content creation becomes that much easier because there's already a brand persona when approaching a particular topic or situation.

After style, there's frequency.  Starting a blog and not maintaining the effort is disheartening to an individual's particular following.  Strides should be made and communicated to your audience to establish an attainable set schedule in which blogs will be posted. This way your audience will have established expectations with your posts and won't be deterred by your absence.

Now comes the engagement.  Being involved with your following through comments and conversations is where the real magic happens.  It is within this forum that you can establish your fundamental truths to your blog; be respectful, prompt, honest, and personable.  Additionally, creating a "reader's bill of rights" would also outline the standards in your blog community.  Not only will this standard keep you honest, but it will also instill fairness and faith amongst your audience.

Finally, there's the timing.  Find out the best time of day for your blogging following to receive and share your content.  Experimenting with different times of day will give you a concrete idea of the "optimal" time your content can be received.  Being attentive to industry happenings, news, and other major events will ensure you have your community's undivided attention in regards to your posts as well.

After listing these "best practices" for what makes a good blog, it's evident that Tmblr can serve as your indispensable blog to create a forum for writing and information delivery.  You have other options, but none are as entertaining, and informative as Tmblr...

Legendary Penn State Coach, Joe Paterno, passed on at 85

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Lung Cancer Has Taken Its Toll And Finally Taken A Legend

State College, PA - January 22, 2012 - NCAA Division I's all-time winningest coach, the legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno, has passed at the age of 85 due to lung cancer.

Paterno built his legacy at Penn State University on the principle of "Success with Honor."  During his tenure at PSU, winning 409 games, taking the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games, winning two national championships, coaching more than 250 players that went on to the NFL, and having an everlasting impression on his former players, he solidified attaining both.

Though his firing amid a child sex abuse scandal will likely scar his reputation for winning with integrity, the void left from his presence and existence in college football is irreplaceable.

"JoePa," as his players affectionately called him, was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players, and his community.  With such admiration created by his actions, it is with great sadness to announce the death of this renowned figure in our society.

Paterno passed Sunday, at Nittany Medical Center at 9:25 a.m. with his closest family members at his side.

Social Media Tools

PBWorks
PBWorks is an online collaborative tool that will allow remote access for groups to specific written material.  It begins with an individual selecting from six different types of Hubs: project, agency, legal, business, wiki, and education.  I chose the project hub, since it was the selection that I would likely use in the near future.  With this selection, individuals would have some nice tools for different types of pages at their disposal; an individual page for assignments, activity tracking, syllabus, sidebar, course, meeting agenda, and the ability to create a page.  It seems that this platform will be utilized by all educators and students in the near future because of its seamless transition from the classroom.  Teachers could post their requirements for class, while students would be able to collaborate for projects and also have a resource for work completed and an itinerary for tasks to come.

Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts is another online collaborative tool that allows broad audiences to connect with each other via webcasts, webinars, and web conferences.  The webcasts, as well as the webinars, would cater to specific audiences, and typically institutes a one-way format from the speaker to the audience.  Live meetings or presentations would be accessible simply by logging on to a computer, which would enable the viewing and participation of a web conference.  With Google Hangouts utilizing these three features, individuals have the luxury of witnessing a bevy of informative and collaborative sessions from the comfort of any setting they see fit.  Because of its convenience, individuals can have hectic schedules, but maintain the capacity to be productive wherever their agenda’s take them.

Online Video Sharing
Have you ever wanted to share more than just the pictures from an event?  How about sharing the entire experience from start to finish in live action?  If you’ve ever had these types of feelings, the perfect solution awaits… Video sharing!  Video sharing allows various people with vast personalities to upload and share online videos of whatever experience they elect.  The most common apparatus for sharing is YouTube, but can also include Vimeo, Vine, Twitter, and Facebook.  These media tools can reach all audiences effectively because all users can connect with each other, send messages, leave feedback, share videos of their similar personal experiences, and also search for additional information.  With over four billion hours of video viewed per month on YouTube, and seventy-two hours of video uploaded every minute, it appears that anything desired to be viewed can be found through this online medium.

Unrestricted Web Publishing

Mass media creates a global home for millions of users who contribute to its informative platforms.  These platforms include Time, The New York Times, or The Huffington Post, and countless others.  Unfortunately, all of the contributors do not follow a strict criteria when it pertains to posting informative and credible content from an actual source.  But, there is help.  In the guidelines illustrated in the article, "Criteria to Evaluate the Credibility of WWW Resources," the author provides several hints that will aid in distinguishing what is reliable information and what is not.
To test and evaluate these guidelines for personal understanding, I visited an online news publication, The New York Times, for articles pertaining to the recent abduction and death of a Palestinian teenager.  I found an  article written by Isabel Kershner, a writer who has covered middle-eastern events on previous articles.  After reading her article, and viewing some of her 3,000-plus postings regarding middle-eastern events, she has generated a distinguishable authority regarding content from that particular region of the world; which is one of the guidelines present in evaluating the credibility of a particular resource.  The author also presents the information from an unbiased perspective; there's no product or organization promotion, or even a personal stance regarding any social/political issues, she only publishes the verifiable facts regarding the issue at hand.  Kershner also provides current information with links from additional NY Times articles that verify relevancy, and the subject can be fully covered in WWW sources.  Thus, substantiating her stance regarding her content.

Kershner, as well as other contributors to online publications, adhering to the specific guidelines providing credible content is essential for followers to be informed to the fullest extent.  Illustrating the opposite, providing unrestricted web publishing, can have a catastrophic effect.  Unrestricted web publishing holds this capability because the posting of unverified content can be misleading to all parties involved.  Providing false or incomplete information, biased information, outdated information, information without credible sources, could possibly result in conflict between two groups of people who ordinarily would not have any involvement with one another.  The misinformation could additionally create a hostile attitude toward a particular region or group of people that, in some cases, could also result in lives being lost.  In any case, whether residential or global, unrestricted web publishing has the potential to cause tragic damages to a society.  Therefore, it is of the responsibility of its contributors to hold themselves and adhere to a higher standard in order to maintain credibility, order, and also peace.
